Place of remembrance for the civilian victims of National Socialism

On the initiative of the parish of Grünbach, in cooperation with the municipality of Grünbach bei Freistadt and the local comradeship association, a working group was founded to remember the victims of euthanasia during the Nazi regime in Grünbach bei Freistadt. The concept of "victim" was reflected upon against the background of the "war memorial" (with the names of soldiers from the community of Grünbach who died and went missing in the First and Second World War), which is located between the parish church, cemetery and place of laying out. The design of the extension includes the victims of "Aktion T4" and victims of the Mauthausen concentration camp from the Grünbach community in the memorial. In a further step of the project, mediation projects for schools as well as lectures and discussion events are planned in cooperation with cultural mediators, historians and people involved on site. A catalogue brochure will also be produced with texts written by those responsible for the project on site, artists and historians. A memorial plaque made of glass will be inscribed with the names, birth and death dates of the victims. A writing band consisting of individual metal letters will be flush mounted in the cobblestone pavement in front of the memorial site.

Auf Initiative der Pfarre Grünbach wurde in Kooperation mit der Gemeinde Grünbach bei Freistadt und des örtlichen Kameradschaftsbundes eine Arbeitsgruppe gegründet, die sich mit der Erinnerung an die Opfer der Euthanasie während der NS-Herrschaft in Grünbach bei Freistadt erinnert. Der „Opfer“-Begriff wurde vor dem Hintergrund des zwischen Pfarrkirche, Friedhof und Aufbahrungsstelle situierten „Kriegerdenkmals“ (mit den Namen der im ersten und zweiten Weltkrieg zu Tode gekommenen und vermissten Soldaten aus der Gemeinde Grünbach) reflektiert. Die Erweiterung nimmt in ihrer Gestaltung namentlich die Opfer der „Aktion T4“ und Opfer aus dem KZ Mauthausen aus dem Gemeindegebiet Grünbach in das Denkmal mit auf. In einem weiteren Projektschritt sind in der Zusammenarbeit mit KulturvermittlerInnen, HistorikerInnen und vor Ort Engagierten Vermittlungsprojekte für Schulen sowie Vorträge und Diskussionsveranstaltungen geplant. Ebenso wird eine Katalogbroschüre mit Texten der Projektverantwortlichen vor Ort, KünstlerInnen und HistorikerInnen erstellt. Eine Gedenktafel aus Glas ist mit den Namen, Geburts- und Sterbedaten der Opfer beschriftet. Ein Schriftband, bestehend aus einzelnen Metallbuchstaben wird bündig in das Kopfsteinpflaster vor dem Gedenkort eingearbeitet.
