Above all, the project is intended to contribute to showing, with regard to theories of subjectivity and the effects of humiliation and torture, that an attempt was made during the Shoah and that it was the Nazis' intention not only to kill the people imprisoned by them, but to desubjectivize them - to destroy and ruin their subjectivity. Torture, in particular, is a direct way of conveying to the subject that he or she can no longer dispose of himself or herself, but is to be ‘materialized’, reduced, subdued and destroyed. If an individual is at the mercy of such processes and procedures, the basic ability to be a free subject is denied and destroyed. The Shoah can be understood as a system of desubjectivization because this logic was fundamentally inscribed in that of the death camps. In them the attempt was made to destroy subjectivity.

Das Projekt soll vor allem dazu beitragen, mit Blick auf Theorien der Subjektivität sowie Auswirkungen von Demütigung und Folter zu zeigen, dass in der Shoah der Versuch unternommen wurde und es die Absicht der Nazis war, die von ihnen Inhaftierten nicht nur zu töten, sondern zu entsubjektivieren – ihre Subjektivität zu zerstören und zugrunde zu richten. Besonders durch die Folter wird dem Subjekt auf direkte Art und Weise vermittelt, dass es nicht mehr über sich selbst verfügen kann, sondern ‚materialisiert’, reduziert, unterworfen und vernichtet werden soll. Ist ein Individuum solchen Prozessen und Vorgängen ausgeliefert, wird darin die grundlegende Fähigkeit, freies Subjekt zu sein, abgesprochen und zerstört. Als ein System der Entsubjektivierung kann die Shoah deshalb begriffen werden, weil diese Logik grundlegend in die der Vernichtungslager eingeschrieben war. In ihnen wurde der Versuch unternommen, Subjektivität zu zerstören.
