This publication is about the film pioneer Luise Kolm-Fleck, who was born on 01 August 1873 in Vienna and died on 15 March 1950 in Vienna. She was the second female film director in the world after the Frenchwoman Alice-Guy-Blache. Her life is interwoven with Austrian history, from the Empire through the difficult interwar years to the Nazi tyranny. Luise Kolm-Fleck's work was influenced by her close collaboration with Jewish filmmakers, for example in the 1937 film “der Pfarrer von Kirchfeld”, the last independent Austrian film before the “Anschluss”, and above all by her (second) marriage to the Jewish cameraman Jakob Fleck, with whom she became known in the German-speaking world as a director couple, and with whom she went into exile from Austria to Shanghai in 1938. The couple were also active in film-making there, and the only Sino-Austrian film made before the founding of the People's Republic of China was founded. Luise Kolm-Fleck's life is regarded as a symbol for the development of cinema in general, of Austro-German film in particular and of the expulsion of artists during the Nazi era.

Diese Publikation handelt von der Filmpionierin Luise Kolm-Fleck, die am 01.08.1873 in Wien geboren und am 15.03.1950 in Wien verstorben ist. Sie war nach der Französin Alice-Guy-Blache die zweite Filmregisseurin der Welt. Ihr Leben ist verwoben mit der österreichischen Geschichte, vom Kaiserreich über die schwierigen Zwischenkriegsjahre bis zur nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft. Luise Kolm-Flecks Arbeit war geprägt von der engen Zusammenarbeit mit jüdischen Filmschaffenden, etwa beim Film „der Pfarrer von Kirchfeld“ aus dem Jahr 1937, dem letzten unabhängigen österreichischen Film vor dem Anschluss, und vor allem von ihrer (zweiten) Ehe mit dem jüdischen Kameramann Jakob Fleck, mit dem sie gemeinsam als Regie-Paar im deutschsprachigen Raum bekannt wurde, und mit dem sie 1938 aus Österreich nach Shanghai ins Exil ging. Auch dort war das Ehepaar filmisch tätig, es entstand der einzige österreichische-chinesische Film vor der Gründung der Volksrepublik China. Luise Kolm-Flecks Leben gilt als Sinnbild für die Entwicklung des Kinos im Allgemeinen, des deutsch-österreichischen Filmgeschehens im Besonderen und der Vertreibung von KünstlerInnen zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus.
