About seven thousand republican Spaniards were deported to Mauthausen. The book tells the life and survival of Paco Aura in Mauthausen, who faithfully kept his promise, which he made together with the other survivors: They would never allow their experiences to be forgotten. Even in his old age he continued to organize conferences and lectures. From his memories, he talks about the persecution of the Spanish Republicans after the defeat against Franco. He tells of the crossing of the border, the refugee camps, the Maginot Line and the flight to Switzerland. But nothing, not even the harsh experiences on the battlefield, could prepare him for what was yet to come: Mauthausen. Paco Aura was born in Alcoy in 1918, joined the Republican forces in 1936, in the fight against the fascist Franco troops and their German and Italian allies. He was imprisoned in Mauthausen for four years and nine months. After liberation he went to France as a miner before returning, in poor health, to his home town in 1953. There he married, had three children and began a new life in the textile industry. Since 2016, a bridge in Alcoy bears his name, in memory of all the Alcoyanos who died in the camps. He attended the inauguration as the last survivor.

Etwa siebentausend republikanische Spanier wurden nach Mauthausen deportiert. Im Buch wird das Leben und Überleben von Paco Aura in Mauthausen erzählt, welcher sich treu an sein Versprechen hielt, welches er sich gemeinsam mit den anderen Überlebenden gegeben hat: Niemals würden sie es zulassen, dass ihre Erlebnisse jemals in Vergessenheit geraten. Selbst in hohem Alter organisierte er noch Konferenzen und Vorträge. Aus seinen Erinnerungen heraus spricht er über die Verfolgung der spanischen RepublikanerInnen nach der Niederlage gegen Franco. Er erzählt vom Überqueren der Grenze, von den Flüchtlingslagern, von der Maginot-Linie und von der Flucht in die Schweiz. Aber nichts, noch nicht einmal die harte Erfahrung auf dem Schlachtfeld, konnte ihn auf das vorbereiten, was noch kommen würde: Mauthausen. Paco Aura wurde 1918 in Alcoy geboren, schloss sich 1936 den Republikanischen Kräften an, im Kampf gegen die faschistischen Franco-Truppen und deren deutschen und italienischen Verbündeten. Er war vier Jahre und neun Monate in Mauthausen gefangen. Nach der Befreiung ging er als Minenarbeiter nach Frankreich, bevor er gesundheitlich stark angeschlagen 1953 in seine Heimatstadt zurückkehrte, wo er heiratete, drei Kinder bekam und in der Textilindustrie ein neues Leben begann. Seit 2016 trägt in Alcoy eine Brücke seinen Namen, in Erinnerung an alle Alcoyanos, die in den Lagern starben. An der Einweihung nahm er als letzter Überlebender teil.
