Islands of remembrance – a contribution to the 70th anniversary celebrations

Gedenkinseln – ein Beitrag zum 70jährigen Bestandsjubiläum

 

The federation of the Carinthian partisans and friends of the anti-fascist resistance celebrates 2018 not only its 70th anniversary, but plans also in various ways to present the focuses of its activities to as broad a public as possible. A bilingual travel guide in book form “Otoki spomina – Gedenkinseln” is to be published in the anniversary year 2018. It is about more than 50 gravesites, memorials and commemorative plaques which stand for prominent figures of the resistance in Southern Carinthia as well as "memorial islands" which bear witness to the horrors and victims of National Socialism. The more detailed historical significance or the historical background of these "memorial islands" is reconstructed with descriptions of the events on site and with the biographies of individual resistance fighters. The informal part is enhanced with pictures and route descriptions (on the website: route planner). In addition, a scholarly essay describes the entire complex of topics of Southern Carinthia. In the following years there will also be an affiliation and collation of all commemorative activities in the country. The travel guide is intended to contribute the first steps towards a listing of individual initiatives.

Der Verband der Kärntner Partisanen und Freunde des antifaschistischen Widerstandes feiert 2018 nicht nur sein 70-jähriges Bestandsjubiläum, sondern plant auch in mannigfacher Weise die Schwerpunkte seiner Tätigkeit einer möglichst breiten Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren. Ein zweisprachiger Reiseführer in Buchform „Otoki spomina - Gedenkinseln“ soll im Jubiläumsjahr 2018 herausgegeben werden. Konkret geht es um mehr als 50 Grabstätten, Gedenkstätten und Gedenktafeln, welche sowohl für markante Persönlichkeiten des Widerstandes in Südkärnten stehen, als auch um „Gedenkinseln“, die von den Gräueln und Opfern des Nationalsozialismus zeugen. Die detailliertere geschichtliche Bedeutung beziehungsweise der historische Hintergrund dieser „Gedenkinseln“ wird mit Beschreibungen der Geschehnisse vor Ort, mit den Biographien einzelner Widerstandskämpferinnen und -kämpfer nachvollzogen, der informelle Teil mit Bildern und Wegbeschreibungen (im Internetangebot dann: Routenplaner) aufgewertet. Zusätzlich beschreibt ein wissenschaftlicher Beitrag den gesamten Themenkomplex Südkärnten. In den folgenden Jahren werden auch ein Zusammenschluss und ein Zusammenfassen aller Gedenkaktivitäten im Land erfolgen. Der Reiseführer soll erste Schritte einer Auflistung einzelner Initiativen dazu beisteuern.
