The project is a follow-up project to the already existing TV documentary series "The Expulsion of the Intelligentsia", which tells stories about people of Jewish descent who were expelled from Vienna, who were able to flee abroad during the Nazi regime and have since become important public figures from various fields. People like Carl Djerassi, Walter Kohl, Martin Karplus and Erika Freeman are in the foreground. Erika Padan Freeman, née Polisiuk, escaped the Nazis from Vienna in February 1940 shortly before her 13th birthday on 1 July as an unaccompanied minor. On 12 March 1940 Erika arrives in New York with the "SS Westerland" and finds shelter with extended relatives in the USA. Her mother Rachel dies on 12 March 1945 in the last bombing raid on the city of Vienna. Until then her mother had survived in the underground. Erika Polisiuk was married to the artist Paul Freeman, who died in 1980. Today she calls herself Erika Padan Freeman, her maiden name has been translated into Hebrew. She is a victim of the brutal racism of the Nazi era and with her optimism and activity she testifies that it is possible to live a life that does not linger in resignation. Even at the age of 91, she is tirelessly trying to help people. During the project, Ms. Freeman will be accompanied through New York, Vienna and Israel, which represent the most important exhibition sites of her life. She gives the viewer an insight into her past and describes her impressions of her career and the events that shaped it.

Das Projekt ist ein Folgeprojekt aus der bereits bestehenden TV-Dokumentationsreihe „Die Vertreibung der Intelligenz“, in welcher Geschichten über aus Wien vertriebene Menschen jüdischer Abstammung erzählt werden, die zu Zeiten des NS-Regimes ins Ausland flüchten konnten und mittlerweile wichtige Personen des öffentlichen Lebens aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen geworden sind. Menschen wie Carl Djerassi, Walter Kohl, Martin Karplus und Erika Freeman stehen dabei im Vordergrund. Erika Padan Freeman, geborene Polisiuk, entkommen im Februar 1940 kurz vor ihrem 13. Geburtstag am 01. Juli als unbegleitete Minderjährige den Nazis aus Wien. Am 12. März 1940 kommt Erika mit der „SS Westerland“ in New York an und findet bei weitläufigen Verwandten in den USA Unterschlupf. Ihre Mutter Rachel kommt am 12. März 1945 beim letzten Bombenangriff auf die Stadt Wien ums Leben. Bis dahin hat ihre Mutter im Untergrund überlebt. Erika Polisiuk war verheiratet mit dem Künstler Paul Freeman, der 1980 starb. Sie nennt sich heute Erika Padan Freeman, ihren Mädchennamen hat sie ins Hebräische übersetzt. Sie ist ein Opfer des brutalen Rassismus der Nazizeit und bezeugt mit ihrem Optimismus und ihrer Aktivität, dass man ein Leben führen kann, das nicht in Resignation verharrt. Sie versucht auch mit 91 Jahren unermüdlich Menschen zu helfen. Während des Projekts wird Frau Freeman durch New York, Wien und Israel begleitet, welches die bedeutendsten Schauorte ihres Lebens repräsentieren. Sie gibt dem Zuschauer Einblick in ihre Vergangenheit und schildert ihre Eindrücke über ihren Werdegang und die prägenden Geschehnisse.
