The documentary is about a Jewish family during the Shoah in Lithuania and an Austrian Wehrmacht soldier who saves them. 25-year-old Petia, his girlfriend Fira and Fira's baby live in the Kaunas ghetto. Tamara, who also lives in Kaunas, and her later husband Franz, an Austrian Wehrmacht soldier, help the young family to survive. Under the barn of a farm, Petia manages to dig a malina, an underground room in which Petia, Fira and 11 other people can hide from the persecutors until the liberation. During this time Fira's daughter is passed off as her own child by Tamara and can survive. Tamara and Franz are the grandparents of filmmaker Doris Kittler. In 2010 Petia Kaplan tells his story to his granddaughter Doris Kittler while she was filming him. This resulted in interview footage of a contemporary witness who dies the following year. His son sent these recordings to Yad Vashem. In 2013, Tamara and Ana are finally declared the "Righteous among the Nations" based on this eyewitness testimony. In an interview, Petia Kaplan tells moving details about the persecution and extermination of Jews in Lithuania between 1941 and 1944.

Der Dokumentarfilm handelt von einer jüdischen Familie während der Shoah in Litauen und von einem österreichischen Wehrmachtsoldaten, der sie rettet. Der 25-jährige Petia, seine Freundin Fira und Firas Baby leben im Ghetto von Kaunas. Die ebenfalls in Kaunas lebende Tamara und ihr späterer Ehemann Franz, ein österreichischer Wehrmachtssoldat, helfen der jungen Familie zu überleben. Unter der Scheune eines Bauernhofs gelingt es Petia mit Hilfe der befreundeten Bewohner eine Malina zu graben, ein unterirdischer Raum, in welchem sich Petia, Fira und 11 andere Personen bis zur Befreiung vor den Verfolgern verstecken können. Firas Tochter wird während dieser Zeit von Tamara als ihr eigenes Kind ausgegeben und kann so überleben. Tamara und Franz sind die Großeltern der Filmemacherin Doris Kittler. Im Jahr 2010 erzählt Petia Kaplan seine Geschichte seiner Enkelin Doris Kittler, während sie ihn filmte. So entstanden Interviewaufnahmen eines Zeitzeugen, der im Jahr darauf stirbt. Sein Sohn schickt diese Aufnahmen nach Yad Vashem. 2013 werden Tamara und Ana auf Basis dieser Zeitzeugenaussage schließlich zu den „Gerechten unter den Völkern“ erklärt. Im Interview erzählt Petia Kaplan ergreifende Details über die Judenverfolgungen und Judenvernichtungen in Litauen zwischen 1941 und 1944.
