Houses of eternity – Jewish cemeteries tell their stories

Together with the ORF III editorial team, a 45-minute TV documentary is planned, which tells the story of the Jewish cemeteries in Vienna. On the basis of important cornerstones of the past, well-known representatives of the former Jewish upper middle class are portrayed. Many of them later became victims of National Socialist persecution. This for two reasons: On the one hand, this period was the heyday of Judaism in Vienna and on the other hand, the stories of individual Viennese Jews of this time have had a visible influence on the life of the metropolis of Vienna to this day. During the last centuries, more than 350.000 Jews were buried in Vienna. Many of them could tell stories. Some of them could have their say. They tell about their lives and a time when the foundation stone for the present was laid in many areas in Vienna. To this end, experts who have studied Jewish cemeteries will be interviewed.

Gemeinsam mit der ORF III Redaktion ist eine TV-Dokumentation in der Länge von 45 Minuten projektiert, welche die Geschichte der jüdischen Friedhöfe in Wien erzählt. Anhand bedeutender Eckpfeiler der Vergangenheit werden namhafte Vertreter des einstigen jüdischen Großbürgertums porträtiert. Viele von ihnen wurden später Opfer der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung. Dies aus zweierlei Gründen: Zum einen war diese Zeit die Blütezeit des Judentums in Wien und zum anderen sind es die Geschichten einzelner Wiener Juden dieser Zeit, die bis heute sichtbaren Einfluss des Lebens der Metropole Wien haben. Mehr als 350.000 Juden wurden in den letzten Jahrhunderten in Wien begraben. Viele davon könnten Geschichten erzählen. Einige von ihnen können so zu Wort kommen. Sie erzählen über ihr Leben und eine Zeit in der in Wien der Grundstein für die Gegenwart in vielen Bereichen gelegt wurde. Dazu werden Experten interviewt, die sich mit Jüdischen Friedhöfen auseinandergesetzt haben.
