Project

Description

In May 1945, after the liberation of the Ebensee concentration camp and the forced labour camps in Ebensee, Polish survivors founded a committee whose task was to look after Polish survivors, find deported relatives and, if necessary, organise a return journey to Poland. The maps were also forwarded to the "DP Information Center" (DPIC) in Gmunden. For this purpose an almost complete registration of all female and male "displaced persons" was carried out on index cards. The committee created two index cards with about 5,000 cards from 1945 onwards. In 2018 the card index was found in the attic of an old salt works building and handed over to the Museum of Contemporary History for viewing and archiving. The cards contain names, dates of birth, nationality, prisoner numbers from Auschwitz, Plaszow and Mauthausen in the case of concentration camp survivors of predominantly Jewish origin, and other relevant data, such as the return journey. In the course of the project, all registration cards will be digitized and recorded in a database. Data on survivors of the Ebensee concentration camp will be compared with the existing prisoner database. A database will be created for the efficient information of relatives, scientists as well as presentation at an infopoint, data carriers in the museum and publication.
