Project

Description

As the results of a preliminary project by the Commission show, during the Nazi era, art and cultural goods reached the then Old Reich as well as other European countries and overseas on a large scale via the art trade. Now, attention is being focused primarily on the art trading companies involved at home and abroad and the role of the Monument Protection Authority. A central role, however, was also played by forwarding agents, who not only stored and transported the objects, but often also submitted export applications. Several of the companies involved had previously been "Aryanized". The project is primarily concerned with those export applications that were submitted by persecuted art and antique dealers, whereby the applications for the export of art and cultural objects from their private possession are also taken into account. It is precisely this group of people that should be examined to see what actually happened to the transportation lifts in question. In many cases it is not apparent from the export files alone whether the removal goods in question even left Nazi Austria and, even if this was the case, whether they ever reached their destinations.
