Imaging Emigration – Translating Exile: Alternative Fluchtrouten von Kunstschaffenden aus/über Österreich

Project

Description

The proposed project involves the organisation of a conference and the quality-assured publication of selected English language contributions in the peer-reviewed series "Palgrave Studies" in Creativity and Culture. The conference pursues two academic aims: On the one hand, it will focus on alternative ways of emigrating musicians, cabaret artists, writers, singers and other artists who were able to flee from or flee via Austria from the Nazi terror. On the other hand - oriented by the "transnational turn" in cultural studies - their work as cultural translators or cultural mediators will be taken as a starting point to question which cultural capital was translated and how it was adapted in the process of translation. How did displaced persons imagine emigration and exile in order to translate it culturally in their art? In addition, the conference is intended to serve as a special platform for the exchange and networking of new research on exile and emigration by and through Austrian exiles as well as exiles who identified with Austria in some way.
