The three: firstly, Lily Renée, born in 1922; she escaped to England and was able to realize her dreams as a draftswoman and illustrator in N.Y. Among other things, she turned the comic heroine Senorita Rio into a fighter against Nazis and other evil forces, thus becoming a cult figure for generations of comic fans. This is also Wilhelm "Bil" Spira (1913 to 1999), portraitist and caricaturist, painter and, last but not least, a gifted forger: he produced visas and passports for countless people stranded in Vichy France for a passage to freedom. Spira survived treason and extermination camps. After the war he was able to continue his career successfully in Paris. Finally, Paul Peter Porges (1927 to 2016); as a child he was already at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, as a teenager in the "Children's Republic" and in internment camps in France, as a young man at the Geneva School of Art: with natural wit and a pen in his hand he made it to the United States and there to the big stages for cartoonists, above all the New Yorker. The Jewish Museum Vienna is showing a representative selection of the works of these extraordinary artists - newly discovered for the Austrian public.

Die drei: Das ist zum einem Lily Renée, geboren 1922; sie entkam nach England und konnte sich in N.Y. als Zeichnerin und Illustratorin verwirklichen. Unter anderem machte sie aus der Comic-Heldin Senorita Rio eine Kämpferin gegen Nazis und andere böse Mächte und wurde damit zur Kultfigur für Generationen von Comicfans. Das ist ferner Wilhelm „Bil“ Spira (1913 bis 1999), Porträtist und Karikaturist, Maler und nicht zuletzt ein begnadeter Fälscher: Unzähligen in Vichy-Frankreich Gestrandeten fertigte er Visa und Pässe für eine Passage in die Freiheit an. Spira überlebte Verrat und Vernichtungslager. Nach dem Krieg konnte er seine Karriere in Paris erfolgreich fortsetzen. Das ist schließlich Paul Peter Porges (1927 bis 2016); als Kind bereits an der Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule, als Halbwüchsiger in der „Kinderrepublik“ und in Internierungslagern in Frankreich, als junger Mann in der Genfer Kunstschule: Mit Mutterwitz und dem Stift in der Hand schaffte er es in die Vereinigten Staaten und dort auf die großen Bühnen für Cartoonisten, allen voran den New Yorker. Das Jüdische Museum Wien zeigt eine repräsentative Auswahl der Arbeiten dieser außergewöhnlichen Künstler – für das österreichische Publikum neu entdeckt.
