A school, a synagogue and the first Jewish Museum in Vienna - at the same time the first Jewish Museum worldwide. Since 1955 the Talmud Thora School Machsike Hadass, a private school with public rights, has been located on this site. At the beginning of 2018, the School Society discovered previously unknown cellars here, which were completely filled with demolition material. Archive research revealed that in the course of the November pogrom the synagogue and the school were destroyed. In 1939, the house had to be adapted for an old people's home, and the demolition material was brought to the basement rooms, including objects from the synagogue and school, which no longer existed, and the dissolved Jewish Museum. The excavation of the rubble brought to light amazing finds - finds that are directly connected with the complex and eventful history of the house. They are material evidence of a lively Jewish life before 1938, but also of its destruction. The House of Austrian History will present these unique finds of Jewish-Austrian history for the first time in public in cooperation with the school association Machsike Hadass.

Eine Schule, eine Synagoge und das erste Jüdische Museum Wiens – gleichzeitig das erste jüdische Museum weltweit. Seit 1955 befindet sich auf diesem Standort die Talmud-Thora-Schule Machsike Hadass, eine Privatschule mit Öffentlichkeitsrecht. Anfang 2018 hat der Schulverein hier bislang unbekannte Kellerräume entdeckt, die vollständig mit Abbruchmaterial gefüllt waren. Archivrecherchen ergaben: Im Zuge des Novemberpogroms wurden die Synagoge und die Schule zerstört. Im Jahr 1939 musste das Haus für ein Altersheim adaptiert werden, das Abbruchmaterial wurde in die Kellerräume gebracht, darunter waren auch Gegenstände aus der nicht mehr existenten Synagoge und Schule und des aufgelösten Jüdischen Museums. Der Aushub des Schuttmaterials brachte erstaunliche Fundstücke zu Tage – Fundstücke, die mit der vielschichtigen und wechselvollen Geschichte des Hauses unmittelbar verbunden sind. Sie sind materielle Zeugnisse eines regen jüdischen Lebens vor 1938, aber auch von dessen Zerstörung. Das Haus der Geschichte Österreichs präsentiert diese einzigartigen Funde jüdisch-österreichischer Geschichte in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schulverein Machsike Hadass erstmals öffentlich.
