Based on the fate of Joseph Roth and many people in his surroundings, the exhibition and book show writers and others burdened by hostility, persecution and a threatened existence from 1933 in Germany and 1938 at the latest in Austria. Despite his insistence that he was a Catholic and a monarchist, Joseph Roth is one of Austria’s most important Jewish authors. One of the main aims of the project was to display antagonism. The book and the exhibition not only deal with France and other exile destinations but also portray Roth’s and the other emigrants’ links to Vienna and Austria closely and clearly.

Ausstellung und Buch zeigen anhand des Schicksals von Joseph Roth und von etlichen weiteren Personen in seinem Umkreis, Schriftsteller und andere, auf denen ab 1933 aus Deutschland und aus Österreich spätestens ab 1938 der Druck der Anfeindung, Verfolgung und Existenzbedrohung lastete. Joseph Roth ist trotz seiner Beteuerungen, Katholik und Monarchist zu sein, einer der wichtigsten jüdischen Autoren Österreichs. Den Antagonismus darzustellen ist eines der Hauptthemen des Projekts. Das Buch und die Ausstellung handeln nicht nur von Frankreich und anderen Exilstationen, sondern stellen gerade den Wien- und Österreich-Bezug des Schriftstellers Roth und der meisten Emigranten eng und evident dar.
