The concentration camp Mauthausen and its numerous satellite camps were established by the SS in 1938. The aim of the National Socialist regime was to recruit prisoners for forced labor. Granite blocks for the new “Führer City” Linz were to be gathered from the quarry. During the last years of the war, the prisoners were increasingly used for slave labor in tunnel construction and the armaments industry. Around half of the 200,000 deported prisoners from all over Europe did not survive to experience the liberation in May 1945.In the 70th memorial year since the establishment of the concentration camp Mauthausen, survivors remembered the events between 1938 and 1945. In their recollections, they looked back on their arrest, deportation, arrival and survival among the inhuman conditions in the camp.

Das Konzentrationslager Mauthausen mit seinen zahlreichen Nebenlagern wurde 1938 von der SS gegründet. Ziel des NS Regimes war es, Häftlinge zur Zwangsarbeit zu rekrutieren. Im Steinbruch sollten Granitblöcke für die neue Führerstadt Linz gehauen werden. Während des späteren Kriegsverlaufes verrichten die Häftlinge zunehmend Sklavenarbeit im Stollenbau und in der Rüstungsindustrie. Rund die Hälfte der 200.000 verschleppten Häftlinge aus halb Europa erlebten die Befreiung im Mai 1945 nicht mehr. Im siebzigsten Gedenkjahr der Gründung des Konzentrationslagers Mauthausen erinnern Überlebende an die Geschehnisse von 1938 bis 1945. In ihren Erzählungen blicken sie zurück auf ihre Verhaftung, Deportation, Ankunft und ihr Überleben inmitten der unmenschlichen Bedingungen im Lager.
