How we lived – Viennese Jews recollect the 20th century in pictures and narratives

Since 2002, Centropa has interviewed over 90 contemporary witnesses of Jewish origin who currently live in Vienna. Over half of these were born in Austria. Several of them have already passed away, others are no longer able to participate in the monthly meetings of Café Centropa. These personal stories and images combine to form a testimony of Viennese Jewry. On the basis of these stories and photos, insight is to be provided into Viennese Jewish life from the older generation’s perspective. The generation which survived the terror of National Socialism and built new lives in Vienna after the war.

Seit 2002 hat Centropa mehr als neunzig ZeitzeugInnen jüdischer Herkunft, die derzeit in Wien leben, interviewt. Mehr als die Hälfte dieser Menschen sind in Österreich geboren. Einige von ihnen sind bereits verstorben, andere sind nicht mehr in der Lage, an den monatlichen Treffen des Café Centropa teilzunehmen. Aus diesen zusammengetragenen Personengeschichten und Bildern wird ein Zeugnis des Wiener Judentums zusammengestellt. Anhand von Geschichten und Fotos soll ein Einblick in das jüdische Leben Wiens gegeben werden, jedoch aus der Sicht der älteren Generation. Jene Generation, die den NS-Terror überlebt hatte und in Wien nach dem Krieg ein neues Leben aufbaute.
