Photos regarding the subject of National Socialism play an increasingly important role in history books. Photos are being used more, particularly in more recent history books. A series of repeatedly used photos (“photo icons”) appear in various sizes and with differing captions. They are generally photos which were commissioned by the National Socialist regime taken with related propaganda contexts, which is not, in many cases, specifically documented. As both photos and moving images now play an increasingly important role as a result of developments in information and communication technology, the planned publication hoped to consider these photos in a historical and cultural scientific context and from the perspective of other closely related scientific disciplines as well as their roles in school textbooks from various perspectives.

Fotos zum Themenbereich Nationalsozialismus spielen in Geschichtslehrbüchern, in der Geschichtskultur allgemein wie auch in den Medien eine immer wichtigere Rolle. Insbesondere in den jüngeren Lehrbüchern ist ein vermehrter Einsatz von Bildmaterial zu beobachten. Eine Reihe von immer wieder eingesetzten Bildern (""Bildikonen"") tauchen in unterschiedlichen Ausschnitten und mit divergierenden Bildunterschriften auf. Meist sind es Fotos, die im Auftrag des NS-Regimes und damit verbundener Propaganda-Kontexte gemacht wurden, was jedoch in vielen Fällen nicht explizit dokumentiert wird. Da sowohl Fotos, wie auch bewegte Bilder durch die Entwicklungen auf dem Sektor der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien eine immer wichtigere Rolle als Informationsträger spielen, ist es ein Anliegen der geplanten Publikation, die Bedeutung dieser Fotos im historisch-kulturwissenschaftlichen Kontext sowie aus Sicht benachbarter Wissenschaftsdisziplinen und ihre Rolle im Schulbuch im Speziellen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu betrachten.
