The Central Austrian Investigation Office for Post-War Justice was established on 15 December 1998 with the aim of documenting the way in which the Austrian justice system dealt with National Socialist crimes by logging and indexing the files of the public prosecutor’s office and courts, in order to contribute to securing this part of Europe’s legal heritage and to introduce historical experience when dealing with war crimes and violations of human rights today.

Die Zentrale österreichische Forschungsstelle Nachkriegsjustiz wurde am 15. Dezember 1998 mit dem Ziel gegründet, mit der Erfassung und Erschließung der Akten der Staatsanwaltschaften und Gerichte die Auseinandersetzung der österreichischen Justiz mit den NS-¬Verbrechen zu dokumentieren, zur Sicherung dieses Teils des europäischen Rechtskultur¬erbes beizutragen und die historische Erfahrung in die Auseinandersetzung mit Kriegsverbrechen und Menschenrechtsverletzungen der Gegenwart einzubringen.
