This book picks up on a desideratum in the history of the City of Vienna: Making visible the persecution, expulsion and murder of the Viennese Jews and Austrian Jews brought to Vienna as part of the Nazi policies of extermination using places and neighborhoods which have been selected as representative of these events. The Vienna of the years 1938–1945 is viewed from the perspective of the victims, with both the topography of terror towards the Jewish population but also the places of survival and self-assertion. The historical events of 1938 to 1945 are bound to specific places and neighborhoods using a multitude of narrative sources, photographs, documents etc. The resulting means of portrayal both complies with the status of academic research and is intended to appeal to a broad public. Firstly, existing research results are presented appealingly and understandably and, secondly new sources regarding the Shoah in Vienna/Austria are recorded. As such, it is intended to appeal both to academics and a broader interested readership.

Das Buch greift ein Desiderat in der Geschichte der Stadt Wien auf: die „Sichtbarmachung“ der Verfolgung, Vertreibung und Ermordung der jüdischen WienerInnen bzw. der im Zuge der NS-Verfolgungspolitik nach Wien verbrachten jüdischen ÖsterreicherInnen anhand von Orten und Stadtteilen, die als repräsentativ für diese Ereignisse ausgewählt werden. Das Wien der Jahre 1938 bis 1945 wird aus der Perspektive der Opfer betrachtet, wobei sowohl die Topographie des Terrors gegenüber der jüdischen Bevölkerung als auch die Orte der Selbstbehauptung und des Überlebens kenntlich gemacht werden. Das Festmachen der historischen Ereignisse 1938–1945 an konkreten Orten und Stadtteilen geschieht durch eine Vielzahl von narrativen Quellen, Fotografien, Dokumenten etc. Damit wurde eine Darstellungsform entwickelt, die einerseits dem Stand der wissenschaftlichen Forschung entspricht, andererseits eine breitere Öffentlichkeit ansprechen soll. In diesem Buch werden einerseits bestehende Ergebnisse der Forschung ansprechend und verständlich dargestellt, andererseits aber auch neue Quellen zur Shoah in Wien/Österreich erschlossen. Damit soll sowohl die Fachwissenschaft als auch eine breitere interessierte Leserschaft angesprochen werden.
