Description

Twenty years ago the diary of Diana Budisavljević was found. During World War II, the Innsbruck native saved thousands of children from certain death in the concentration camps of the Ustascha in Croatia and kept a detailed account of it. This film uses her story to tell of the Ustasha regime, which was no less brutal than the horror of the Nazis in Germany and Austria. After Croatia joined World War II in 1941, it became an ally of Germany and Italy. The Croatian fascists Ustasha committed genocide at that time, especially against Serbian Orthodox people. By means of the rescue of many thousands of children, the structure and history of the fascist regime is discussed - and the courageous woman who opposed it. The film conveys the history of the Ustasha regime on the basis of the events surrounding Diana Budisavljević. For despite the local proximity to Austria, the existence of the Ustasha is largely unknown in this country and the story of Diana Budisavljević, who saved far more people than an Oskar Schindler, must also be told as a positive example of civil courage.
