The phenomenon of denunciation was widespread during the Nazi era. Between 1938 and 1945, the slander of friends, superiors, neighbours, family members and colleagues was also commonplace in Austria. Hugo Paterno, a customs guard in Vorarlberg, was denounced twice as an exemplary case by supporters of the Nazi regime and was finally executed in July 1944. The journalist Wolfgang Paterno goes on a search for traces of his grandfather and writes in his book "Hugo. The forgotten life and death of my executed grandfather" about his fate.

Das Phänomen der Denunziation war in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus weit verbreitet. Zwischen 1938 und 1945 stand auch in Österreich die Verleumdung von Freunden, Vorgesetzten, Nachbarn, Familienmitgliedern und ArbeitskollegInnen an der Tagesordnung. Der Vorarlberger Zollwachbeamte Hugo Paterno wurde als exemplarischer Fall von Mitläufern des NS-Regimes gleich zweimal denunziert und schließlich im Juli 1944 hingerichtet. Der Journalist Wolfgang Paterno begibt sich auf Spurensuche seines Großvaters und schreibt in seinem Buch „Hugo. Das vergessene Leben und Sterben meines hingerichteten Großvaters“ über dessen Schicksal.
