"Das Schweigen der Alten" (The silence of the old) sets out to find the background of a forgotten mass murder in a small village in Lower Austria. The story of Jakob Schwarz is the central theme of our cinema documentary about this massacre. But the film is also a journey into the past of the neighbouring communities Persenbeug and Hofamt Priel, where I grew up in the 1980s and 1990s. "Das Schweigen der Alten" tells the story of the massacre and its aftermath up to the present day as a parable of forgetting. The framework plot is the search for an explanation of what happened. Protagonists are the last survivors and contemporary witnesses. Many of these people have not talked about the murders for over 70 years and are now recounting their memories of the massacre for the first time.

„Das Schweigen der Alten” macht sich auf die Suche nach den Hintergründen eines vergessenen Massenmordes in einer kleinen niederösterreichischen Ortschaft. Die Geschichte des Jakob Schwarz ist der rote Faden durch unsere Kinodokumentation über dieses Massaker. Der Film ist aber auch eine Reise in die Vergangenheit der benachbarten Gemeinden Persenbeug und Hofamt Priel, in denen ich in den 1980er- und 1990er-Jahren aufwuchs. „Das Schweigen der Alten“ erzählt die Geschichte des Massakers und seiner Nachwirkungen bis in die Gegenwart als eine Parabel des Vergessens. Rahmenhandlung ist die Suche nach einer Erklärung des Geschehens. Protagonisten sind die letzten Überlebenden und Zeitzeugen. Viele dieser Menschen haben über 70 Jahre nicht über die Morde gesprochen und erzählen nun zum ersten Mal ihre Erinnerung an das Massaker.
