A lost world. Jewish Austria before and after World War II

This 45-minute television documentary explores the question of how Jewish Austria changed as a result of the upheavals of World War II. Not only were people expelled from the once flourishing centres of Jewish life, but traditions, customs, buildings and places of activity also disappeared. The examples of Vienna, Hohenems and the region of the Bucklige Welt show how long Jewish communities had existed here, the extent of these communities and how people lived. Geiblinger Filmproduktion sets out on a search for lost Jewish centers and visits lost places of remembrance together with surviving eyewitnesses. Documents, letters and photographs document the history, interviews with experts create the scientific framework and historical context. Film archive material from the 1930s is also used to illustrate everyday life in Austria.

Diese 45-minütige Fernsehdokumentation geht der Frage nach, wie sich das jüdische Österreich durch die Umwälzungen des Zweiten Weltkrieges verändert hat. Aus den vormals blühenden Zentren jüdischen Lebens wurden nicht nur die Menschen vertrieben, es verschwanden auch Traditionen, Gebräuche, Gebäude und Wirkungsstätten. An den Beispielen Wien, Hohenems und der Region Bucklige Welt wird aufgezeigt, seit wann es hier jüdische Gemeinden gab, welchen Umfang sie hatten, wie die Menschen lebten. Die Geiblinger Filmproduktion begibt sich auf die Suche nach verschwundenen jüdischen Zentren, und besucht mit ZeitzeugInnen verloren gegangene Erinnerungsorte. Dokumente, Briefe und Fotografien belegen die Geschichte, ExpertInneninterviews schaffen den wissenschaftlichen Rahmen und historischen Kontext. Verwendet wird weiters auch filmisches Archivmaterial aus den 1930er-Jahren, um den Alltag in Österreich zu illustrieren.
