The "protein deficit" and protein synthesis in the Third Reich: the Development of synthetic protein and its testing through experiments on humans in concentration camps and prisons - and its after effects.

Die „Eiweißlücke“ und die Proteinsynthese im Dritten Reich: Die Entwicklung von synthetischem Protein und seine Erprobung durch Humanexperimente in Konzentrationslagern und Haftanstalten - und seine Nachwirkungen

 

In historical research, the subject "experiments on humans under National Socialism" is without doubt one of the newest areas of research of recent decades. During the course of National Socialist policies, the biggest capacity gaps in the areas of protein and fat became of great importance due to the need to import great amounts. In this regard, investigations and experiments were carried out in concentration camps, whereby the tolerance to synthetically produced food replacements and their effects on health and fitness were tested on the inmates. In this research project, both the “scientific” accompanying investigations and the “simple task” as a food replacement on inmates in concentration camps was documented and followed – and the institutional and organizational structures and staff networks which formed part of the planning, research, development and marketing of the harmful synthetic protein products in the Third Reich were investigated.

Der Themenbereich „Humanexperimente im Nationalsozialismus“ gehört in der historischen Forschung zweifellos zu den neueren Forschungsgebieten des vergangenen Jahrzehnts. Im Zuge der Politik der Nationalsozialisten wurde den großen „Erzeugungslücken“ in den Bereichen Eiweiß und Fett wegen des hohen Importbedarfs große Bedeutung beigemessen. In diesem Zusammenhang erfolgten Untersuchungen bzw. Experimente in Konzentrationslagern, bei denen die Verträglichkeit synthetisch hergestellter Ersatznahrungsmittel in ihren Auswirkungen auf Gesundheitszustand und Leistungsfähigkeit der Häftlinge getestet wurden. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprojektes sollen sowohl die „wissenschaftlich“ begleitenden Untersuchungen als auch die „einfache Ausgabe“ als billiges Ersatznahrungsmittel an Häftlinge in Konzentrationslagern dokumentiert bzw. verfolgt werden – und die institutionellen und organisatorischen Strukturen sowie die personellen Netzwerke, die an der Planung, Forschung und Entwicklung sowie der Vermarktung der gesundheitsschädlichen, synthetischen Eiweißprodukte im Dritten Reich beteiligt waren, untersucht werden.
