This work portrays the situation of the group of Austrian prisoners in the National Socialist ghetto Theresienstadt in the former “Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia”. Over one third of Jews who were deported from Austria ended up in this camp, which played a very special role in the National Socialist policies of extermination. It functioned both as a collection camp and a pensioners’ ghetto and finally as an alibi for the responsible National Socialists who wanted to use it to conceal the murder of the European Jews. Theresienstadt continued to stay firmly in the public consciousness after the war as a “model ghetto”. On the basis of the Austrian Jews who arrived at Theresienstadt, the majority old people, who either rapidly perished as a result of the conditions in the camp or were sent on to the East soon after their arrival and murdered, the present work is able to refute this image of Theresienstadt.

Die gegenständliche Arbeit zeichnet die Situation der österreichischen Häftlingsgruppe im nationalsozialistischen Ghetto Theresienstadt im ehemaligen ""Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren"" nach. Von den Jüdinnen und Juden, die aus Österreich deportiert worden waren, gelangte über ein Drittel in dieses Lager, das im Rahmen der NS-Vernichtungspolitik eine ganz besondere Rolle spielte. Es fungierte sowohl als Sammellager als auch als Altersghetto und schließlich als Alibi für die NS-Verantwortlichen, die damit den Mord an den europäischen Jüdinnen und Juden verschleiern wollten. Als ""Musterghetto"" hat sich Theresienstadt auch in der Nachkriegszeit hartnäckig im öffentlichen Gedächtnis gehalten. Gerade anhand der Gruppe der österreichischen Jüdinnen und Juden, die in der überwiegenden Mehrheit als alte Menschen ins Lager kamen und entweder aufgrund der Lagerbedingungen hier rasch zugrunde gingen oder bald nach ihrer Ankunft weiter in die östlichen Vernichtungslager geschickt und dort ermordet wurden, kann in vorliegender Arbeit dieses Bild Theresienstadts widerlegt werden.
