Persecution at home: Eviction and Resettlement of Jews within the city space 1938–1942

Zu Hause verfolgt: Zwangsräumungen und Umsiedlung von Jüdinnen und Juden im Stadtraum 1938–1942)

 

The conference will deal with the forced resettlement of the Jewish population within the urban space by the Nazi regime and the significance of this measure for the deprivation of rights, exclusion, expulsion and ultimately deportation of the Jewish population. The system of "Jewish houses" and "collective housing" was not limited to Vienna, but was implemented in most major cities of Western and Central Europe in the late 1930s and early 1940s. An international conference will focus on this phenomenon comparatively and compare the patterns of forced resettlement by the Nazi regime in different European cities. The conference, announced by a call for papers and held in English, is aimed at scholars from various fields of research and is intended to provide impetus for future joint research into the "ghettoization" of the Jewish population in their home towns in Central and Western Europe.

Die Tagung wird sich mit der zwangsweisen Umsiedlung der jüdischen Bevölkerung innerhalb des Stadtraums durch das NS-Regime und der Bedeutung dieser Maßnahme für die Entrechtung, Ausgrenzung, Vertreibung und schlussendlich Deportation der jüdischen Bevölkerung auseinandersetzen. Das System von „Judenhäusern“ und „Sammelwohnungen“ war nicht auf Wien beschränkt, sondern wurde in den meisten Großstädten West- und Mitteleuropas Ende der 1930er- und Anfang der 1940er-Jahre umgesetzt. Eine internationale Tagung soll sich diesem Phänomen komparativ widmen und die Muster der Zwangsumsiedlungen durch das NS-Regime in verschiedenen Städten Europas vergleichen. Die durch einen Call of Papers ausgeschriebene und in englischer Sprache abgehaltene Tagung richtet sich an WissenschafterInnen aus unterschiedlichen Forschungsgebieten und soll Anstoß zu einer zukünftigen gemeinsamen Erforschung der „Ghettosierung“ der jüdischen Bevölkerung in ihren Heimatstädten in Mittel- und Westeuropa sein.
