Description

The exhibition is dedicated to Viennese children who were sent abroad without their parents from winter 1938 until the outbreak of World War II in autumn 1939. The children, who had fled to countries the Nazis later invaded, experienced persecution repeatedly, and not all of them survived. Britain gave the appearance of a safe haven. But the arrival on the island also meant the end of childhood. Alone in a country with a foreigh language, with constant concern for the survival of the family, the children had to endure stressful and insecure situations on their own. Some were passed from one foster family to another, others could not be placed and were placed in homes or boarding schools, girls often had to work as domestic help. Finding suitable accommodation immediately or even reuniting with parents who had also fled was the exception. While younger children often lost their mother tongue, older boys were interned for several months when war broke out.
