Description
Before the Shoah, Währing, the 18th district of Vienna, had a variety of Jewish life with all the necessary facilities, as in few other districts of Vienna. Before the "Anschluss" in March 1938, some 5,500 Jews lived here; it was the home district of the "little people" in the municipal buildings as well as the upper middle-classes in the villas of the cottage district. Some personalities from science and literature are world-famous today. The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet with the exhibition texts and photos as well as excerpts from sources and life memories. In addition to the exhibition, a series of events is planned at the Bezirksamt Währing.

Wie nur in wenigen anderen Wiener Bezirken bestand in Währing, dem 18. Gemeindebezirk, vor der Shoah eine Vielfalt jüdischen Lebens mit allen dafür nötigen Einrichtungen. Vor dem „Anschluss“ im März 1938 lebten hier rund 5.500 Jüdinnen und Juden, es war der Heimatbezirk der „kleinen Leute“ im Gemeindebau ebenso wie der GroßbürgerInnen in den Villen des Cottageviertels. Einige Persönlichkeiten aus Wissenschaft und Literatur sind heute weltbekannt. Die Ausstellung wird von einem Booklet mit den Ausstellungstexten und Fotos sowie Auszügen aus Quellen und Lebenserinnerungen begleitet. Ergänzend zur Ausstellung ist im Bezirksamt Währing eine Veranstaltungsreihe geplant.
