“Have you seen my Alps?“ A history of Jewish relations

The exhibition “Have you seen my Alps”. For the first time, a history of Jewish relations put the importance of Jewish mountain climbers and artists, tourism pioneers and intellectuals, researchers, doctors and collectors and their role in discovering the Alps as a site of universal cultural and natural heritage in the center stage. At the same time, the exhibition focused on the exclusion of the Jewish citizens from civil society, like the strike of a pendulum, which was concentrated on the Alpine organizations, the folklore and the alpine traditions as if under a burning glass. The Jewish experience of the mountains as a place of spiritual, sensuous and political experience is equally as related to the Jewish joining the civil society of Europe as it is to exclusion, anti-Semitism and National Socialism. The exhibition was shown in three locations: Jewish Museum Hohenems: April 2009 – October 2009, Jewish Museum Vienna: December 2009 – March 2010, Alpines Museum Munich: April 2010 – December 2010.

Die Ausstellung „Hast Du meine Alpen gesehen?“ Eine jüdische Beziehungsgeschichte rückt die Bedeutung jüdischer Bergsteiger und Künstler, Tourismuspioniere und Intellektueller, Forscher, Mediziner und Sammler und ihre Rolle bei der Entdeckung der Alpen als universelles Kultur- und Naturerbe zum ersten Male ins Rampenlicht. Zugleich fokussiert die Ausstellung die seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert wie ein Pendel zurückschlagende Ausgrenzung jüdischer Bürger aus der Zivilgesellschaft, die sich in den alpinen Organisationen, in der Volkskunde und in der alpinen Traditionspflege wie unter einem Brennglas konzentrierte. So ist die jüdische Erfahrung der Berge als Ort geistiger, sinnlicher und politischer Erfahrung mit dem jüdischen Eintritt in die bürgerliche Gesellschaft Europas gleichermaßen wie mit Ausgrenzung, Antisemitismus und Nationalsozialismus verbunden. Die Ausstellung wird an drei Orten gezeigt: Jüdisches Museum Hohenems: April 2009 – Oktober 2009, Jüdisches Museum Wien: Dezember 2009 – März 2010, Alpines Museum München: April 2010 – Dezember 2010.
