Description

Surviving Gusen follows the memories of Karl Littner and other survivors of the "invisible camp Gusen": from the unbelievably cruel deportation in January 1945 in an open coal wagon to the liberation of the concentration camp by an advance guard of the US army on May 5, 1945. The film assembles eyewitness reports, gendarmerie protocols as well as Karl Littner's narratives on his essayistic journey of discovery. Visually set in the present time, alternating with informative historical images licensed from international sources, the film approaches the subject as sensitively as possible without showing the protagonists in the role of victims. Along the Summerauerbahn (Upper Austria), a former deportation line, the film follows personal memories of Holocaust survivors, recordings of regional chronicles and letters. The on-off voices, together with the present-day images of the former crime scenes, create a collage of different perspectives on events that ultimately cannot be depicted.
