Description

For eight years now, the orchestra of the St. Blasius Academy, based in Innsbruck and the Tyrol, has also been committed to "degenerate" music. In its concert series Memento, there is a collaboration with chief cantor Shmuel Barzilai. In memory of the ostracized composers, chief cantor Shmuel Barzilai sings Jewish songs. Around "Shma Israel" and traditional Jewish songs (accompanied by the Academy of St. Blasius), the artistic director of the Academy of St. Blasius Karlheinz Siessl has conceived works by Franz Schreker (1878-1934) and Hans Krasa (1899-1944). They were among the most respected composers of their time. Their independent tonal languages were acclaimed and held in great esteem. The Nazis, however, defamed their music as "degenerate." Franz Schreker's and Hans Krasa's music was banned, and the composers disappeared from memory.
