Exil in Shanghai – Letzte Hoffnung im fernen Osten

 

Around 4,000 Austrians fled from Nazi terror to Shanghai. This television documentary traces their escape routes and tells how people fared in the Chinese metropolis and who returned to Austria after the end of the war. When all other countries slowly closed their borders to Nazi refugees after the start of the war in 1939, Shanghai turned out to be one of the last ports of refuge. The exiles mostly reached the strange metropolis by sea, but also by the arduous overland route. They brought with them hope and optimism and gave rise to a flourishing culture of exile. In "Little Vienna", people met in Viennese coffee houses, listened to concerts, and attended theater and cabaret performances. A thoroughly pleasant life - until the war also reached Shanghai and forced the emigrants into a ghetto. Poverty, hunger and hardship characterized these years. After the end of the war, most of the "Shanghailanders" migrated on to the United States or Palestine. Few returned to Austria. This documentary shows objects, documents, photographs and correspondence, works with quotations and other archive material. Interviews with scientists and historians place the events in the context of contemporary history. The film is shot in Vienna. The current material is juxtaposed with previously little-published images from various film archives.

Rund 4.000 ÖsterreicherInnen flohen vor dem NS-Terror nach Shanghai. Diese Fernsehdokumentation zeichnet ihre Fluchtwege nach und erzählt, wie es den Menschen in der chinesischen Metropole erging und wer nach Kriegsende wieder nach Österreich zurückkehrte. Als nach Kriegsbeginn 1939 langsam alle Staaten ihre Grenzen für NS-Flüchtlinge schlossen, entpuppte sich Shanghai als einer der letzten Rettungshäfen. Meist über den Seeweg, doch auch über den beschwerlichen Landweg, erreichten die Vertriebenen die fremdartige Metropole. Sie brachten Hoffnung und Optimismus mit und ließen eine blühende Exil-Kultur entstehen. In „Little Vienna“ traf man sich in Wiener Kaffeehäusern, man lauschte Konzerten, besuchte Theater- und Kabarettvorstellungen. Ein durchaus angenehmes Leben – bis der Krieg auch Shanghai erreichte und die EmigrantInnen in einem Ghetto zusammendrängte. Armut, Hunger und Not prägten diese Jahre. Nach Kriegsende wanderten die meisten „Shanghailänder“ weiter in die Vereinigten Staaten oder nach Palästina. Wenige kamen nach Österreich zurück. Diese Dokumentation zeigt Objekte, Dokumente, Fotografien und Korrespondenz, arbeitet mit Zitaten und anderem Archivmaterial. Interviews mit WissenschaftlerInnen und HistorikerInnen stellen das Geschehen in den zeitgeschichtlichen Kontext. Gedreht wird in Wien. Dem aktuellen Material werden bisher wenig veröffentlichte Bilder aus verschiedenen Filmarchiven gegenübergestellt.
