Project

Description

The aim of the project is to record the names of the Jewish students from Galicia who were enrolled at the Imperial and Royal Export Academy and its successor, the University of World Trade. At the same time, the history of these students, who made up a considerable part of the student body of the Export Academy and World Trade University until well into the 1920s, is to be researched up to the complete exclusion of Jewish students in the wake of the Anschluss of Austria. With a view to the events of 1938, the proposed project offers the opportunity to complement the memorial project that the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration has been running since 2013 in honor of the victims of Nazi persecution. The project is based on a cooperation between an Austrian and a US-American institution: At the Institute for Economic and Social History of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, the students concerned are being researched on the basis of the surviving holdings of the University Archives of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration. The data obtained in the process and the scans provided are made available to the public in a database set up and maintained by the non-profit organization Gesher Galicia (Los Angeles). An academic publication will summarize the results of the project.
