The book describes the life of Mela Apfelbaum, the mother of the social psychologist Erika Apfelbaum. From Mela's birth in Przemysl in 1899 to her death in Provence in 1944, her life was so intertwined with the events of the 20th century that it cannot be understood without reference to the historical context; a life marked by numerous exiles. Among other things, she lived as a young girl in Vienna during the First World War, spent the years of the Great Depression and the rise of Nazism in Germany, and finally fled to France with her husband and child in 1937.

Das Buch beschreibt das Leben von Mela Apfelbaum, der Mutter der Sozialpsychologin Erika Apfelbaum. Angefangen von Melas Geburt in Przemysl im Jahr 1899 bis zu ihrem Tod in der Provence 1944 war dieses Leben so sehr mit den Geschehnissen des 20. Jahrhunderts verknüpft, dass es nicht ohne Bezugnahme auf den historischen Kontext verstanden werden kann; ein Leben, dass durch zahlreiche Exile gekennzeichnet ist. So lebte sie unter anderem während des Ersten Weltkrieges als junges Mädchen in Wien, verbrachte die Jahre der Weltwirtschaftskrise und des Aufkommens des Nationalsozialismus in Deutschland und floh schließlich mit Mann und Kind im Jahr 1937 nach Frankreich.
