Arthur Gottlein (1895-1977) was usually in the second row, but had all the strings in his hands – as assistant director on dozens of major productions, as recording and production manager alongside the producer Alexander Graf Kolowrat, and later as director of the Shanghai Puppet Theatre. Driven into exile by the Nazis, he later helped dozens of people to emigrate overseas and became involved in the Austrian Film Trade Union after his return. He was a devout Jew and a passionate collector who provided the Filmarchiv Austria with an important collection on the history of early Austrian film in his estate.

Arthur Gottlein (1895–1977) stand meist in der zweiten Reihe, hatte jedoch alle Fäden in der Hand – als Hilfsregisseur bei dutzenden Großproduktionen, als Aufnahme- und Produktionsleiter neben dem Produzenten Alexander Graf Kolowrat, später als Leiter der Shanghaier Puppenspiele. Von den Nationalsozialisten ins Exil getrieben, verhalf er später Dutzenden Menschen zur Weiterwanderung nach Übersee und engagierte sich nach der Rückkehr in der Österreichischen Filmgewerkschaft. Er war gläubiger Jude und ein leidenschaftlicher Sammler, der dem Filmarchiv Austria in seinem Nachlass eine wichtige Sammlung zur Geschichte des frühen österreichischen Films zur Verfügung stellte.
