This volume now documents the artist's entire oeuvre from the 1950s to 2020. His work, which extends considerably beyond the second half of the 20th century, displays numerous stylistic facets that are always oriented towards the representational and do not follow the trend towards abstraction that was prevalent in his time. The book traces this development chronologically and thematically and illustrates the diversity of Schönwald's work with extensive visual material. Schönwald takes complex themes as his starting point, which he usually translates into pictorial narratives that take the form of cycles, which he works out in drawings or prints. To this end, he uses various techniques such as etching, lithography and woodcut as well as charcoal and pencil drawing. Numerous works by the artist as well as several graphic cycles are reproduced here for the first time, including the "Odyssey" consisting of 13 drawings, which Schönwald completed in 2018 in his 90th year. In addition, a comprehensive catalogue of works has been compiled for this publication. Rudolf Schönwald is one of the central artistic figures of his generation in Vienna. In appreciation of the great significance of his art, this publication - in close collaboration with the artist - is now being published to mark his 94th birthday. The publication will be published by Bibliothek der Provinz and has 480 pages.

Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert nun das gesamte Schaffen des Künstlers von den 1950er-Jahren bis zum Jahr 2020. Das über die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts deutlich hinausreichende Werk weist zahlreiche stilistische Facetten auf, die sich immer am Gegenständlichen orientieren und nicht dem zu seiner Zeit vorherrschenden Trend zur Abstraktion folgen. Das Buch zeichnet diese Entwicklung chronologisch und thematisch nach und veranschaulicht die Vielfalt von Schönwalds Werk mit umfangreichem Bildmaterial. Schönwald geht von komplexen Themen aus, die er meist in die Form von Zyklen annehmenden Bilderzählungen umsetzt, die er zeichnerisch oder druckgrafisch erarbeitet. Dafür nutzt er unterschiedliche Techniken wie Radierung, Lithografie und Holzschnitt sowie Kohle- und Bleistiftzeichnung. Zahlreiche Werke des Künstlers sowie etliche Grafikzyklen werden hier erstmalig reproduziert, so auch die aus 13 Zeichnungen bestehende „Odyssee“, die Schönwald 2018 im 90. Lebensjahr fertigstellte. Außerdem ist ein umfangreiches Werkverzeichnis für diese Publikation erarbeitet worden. Rudolf Schönwald ist eine der zentralen Künstlerpersönlichkeiten seiner Generation in Wien. In Würdigung der großen Bedeutung seiner Kunst erscheint die vorliegende Publikation ‒ in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler ‒ nun zu seinem 94. Geburtstag. Die Publikation wird im Verlag Bibliothek der Provinz erscheinen und hat einem Umfang von 480 Seiten.
