Project

Description

Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele, Klaus Barbie and Erich Priebke: These names are representative of many Nazi criminals who found refuge in South America after 1945. They either lived their lives undisturbed or were not held accountable for their deeds until years later. Research into their whereabouts in South America was conducted while they were still alive. Over 75 years after the Second World War, the aim is to first take stock of previous research. Based on this, new research questions are to be investigated and previously unprocessed source material and new groups of people to be researched are to be identified. The aim is thus to reassess the field of research on German and Austrian Nazis and sympathizers in South America as well as their (inter)national connections.
