Project

Description

The planned project will examine for the first time a variant of transnational resistance that manifested itself in potentiated form. Hundreds of Austrian exiles participated in the French resistance in various ways against the German occupying power in 1941–1944. Under the illusory assumption that they would find more favorable conditions for political underground activity at home, some of these resistance fighters returned to the “Ostmark” between 1941 and 1944 on the recommendation of the Austrian Communist Party leadership, with well-forged papers that identified them as French civilian workers. In fact, a relatively successful resistance network was initially established with bases in Vienna, Lower Austria, Linz and Slovenia. In the second part of the project, the political biography of the Jewish resistance fighter Antonia Lehr (1907–1992), who was employed as an interpreter in the Floridsdorf locomotive factory as part of this group in 1943/44, will be presented as a particularly dramatic individual fate. Arrested on 4 July 1944, she was deported to Auschwitz. After the extensive archival work has been completed and a final scientific report has been written, an exhibition will also be presented at the Hietzing Adult Education Centre.
