„My job will be rock climbing…“ Digitale Kurzbiografie und Datenbank zu Exilösterreichern in der 10. US-Gebirgsdivision des Zweiten Weltkriegs

Project

Description

During World War II, the so-called 10th Mountain Division was not only the only major unit of the US Land Forces specialized in mountain combat and winter operations: hastily re-formed in the midst of the war, this semi-elite and military infantry force, which made a successful appearance toward the end of the war, was also a catch-all for what must have been hundreds of exiled Austrians or 1938 refugees, including dozens of winter and mountain sports enthusiasts. The dislocations of their time, triggered by Nazism and war, were to displace the latter during the war to Camp Hale, a barracks camp spectacularly situated at some 2,800 meters altitude in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. This unusual place was now the “home base” of the new US Mountain Warriors. Based on previous research and with the help of new source research in the USA, internet research and literature evaluation, all names and basic biographical data of the estimated 200 Austrians in this militarily, sociologically and culturally special unit will be determined and documented in a database. In addition, short exile or war biographies of all persons concerned will be written as well as an instructive essay historically systematizing the research results.
