Description

Among other things, this volume focuses primarily on the political significance of music in exile. From 1931, Stefan Zweig worked together with Richard Strauss on a comic opera, and from 1934 was friends with Arturo Toscanini. After Hitler came to power, Zweig went to England. He used his connections to provide moral and, above all, financial support to many musicians who were friends of his and had also been exiled. From Zweig’s correspondence with Romain Rolland or with the critic Lavinia Mazzucchetti, it is clear that he took part in the discussion surrounding the pros and cons of Wilhelm Furtwängler or Richard Strauss, who were accused of accommodating the Nazis. The exchange of letters with Jewish musicians or composers also deserves to be examined because in them Zweig reflects on his Jewish identity and his (ambivalent) relationship to Judaism and antisemitism.
