The editor, Jeanette Mayrhofer-Berger, is the daughter of resistance fighters Ida (Judith) and Moritz Margulies. She found eleven letters in an old suitcase 55 years after her father's death. Moritz Margulies wrote those letters in the period from 1957 to 1961. In the letters, which are addressed to his childhood best friend from his hometown of Czernowitz, he describes his life from 1920 to 1944. He recounts to his friend Max, who had been living in Canada since 1929, in extraordinary, stirring language both private experiences and memories, such as meeting his great love Judith (Ida), and the political situation in a changing Austria. Since meeting in 1929, Ida and Moritz were politically active side by side – throughout their whole lives. Because of their illegal communist activities, the couple were on the run from 1936 until the end of the war, but they were perennially active in the resistance against the Nazis. The letters are a contemporary document of Austrian history, not researched but experienced and very personally reported. In addition, photos provide special historical insight.

Die Herausgeberin, Jeanette Mayrhofer-Berger, ist die Tochter der Widerstandskämpferin Ida (Judith) und Moritz Margulies. Sie findet 55 Jahre nach dem Tod ihres Vaters elf Briefe in einem alten Koffer. Moritz Margulies hat diese Briefe im Zeitraum 1957–1961 geschrieben. In den Briefen, die an seinen besten Kindheitsfreund aus seiner Heimatstadt Czernowitz adressiert sind, beschreibt er sein Leben von 1920 bis 1944. Er erzählt seinem Freund Max, der seit 1929 in Kanada lebt, in einer außerordentlichen, mitreißenden Sprache sowohl private Erlebnisse und Erinnerungen, wie das Kennenlernen seiner großen Liebe Judith (Ida), als auch von der politischen Lage in einem sich wandelnden Österreich. Seit ihrem Kennenlernen im Jahr 1929 sind Ida und Moritz Seite an Seite – ein Leben lang – politisch aktiv. Wegen illegaler kommunistischer Betätigung befand sich das Paar von 1936 bis Kriegsende auf der Flucht, wo sie im Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus immer tätig waren. Bei den Briefen handelt es sich um ein Zeitdokument österreichischer Geschichte, nicht recherchiert, sondern erlebt und sehr persönlich berichtet. Zusätzlich geben Fotos einen besonderen Einblick in die Geschichte.
