At the University of Vienna, on 12 March 2022 (foundation day of the University of Vienna in 1365, anniversary of the “Anschluss” in 1938), a memorial will be erected in memory of the students and teachers of the History Department who were expelled under the Nazi regime, for which the memorial design “When Names Shine Bright” by Iris Andraschek emerged from an artistic competition. For the opening, this book will present the historical background of the expulsion, the biographies of the exiled, the creation of the memorial and the artistic concept. The strong anti-democratic and antisemitic sentiment of the University of Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as the active role of the University in the expulsion of a large number of its faculty and students under Nazism in 1938–1945, form the background of this initiative.

An der Universität Wien wird am 12. März 2022 (Gründungstag der Universität Wien 1365, Jahrestag des „Anschlusses“ 1938) ein Denkmal in Erinnerung an die im Nationalsozialismus vertriebenen Studierenden und Lehrenden der Studienrichtung Geschichte errichtet werden, wofür der Denkmalsentwurf „Wenn Namen leuchten“ von Iris Andraschek aus einem künstlerischen Wettbewerb hervorging. Zur Eröffnung soll dieses Buch die historischen Hintergründe der Vertreibung, die Biografien der Vertriebenen, die Entstehung des Denkmals und das künstlerische Konzept vorstellen. Die stark antidemokratische und antisemitische Grundstimmung der Universität Wien in den 1920er- und 1930er-Jahren sowie die aktive Rolle der Universität bei der Vertreibung einer großen Zahl ihrer Lehrenden und Studierenden im Nationalsozialismus 1938–1945 bilden den Hintergrund dieser Initiative.
