Description

In Smaryd, outside Bastad, stands the summer residence of the Bolin family. The villa, built by the Russian court jeweler Wilhelm Bolin, became a place of refuge for the family. One day, Bolin’s great-grandson Gunnar discovered a family secret there: letters bearing witness to the fates of those who lived in the shadow of the great political events of the 20th century. The fates of his great-grandfather Wilhelm during the Russian Revolution and his grandmother Karin, niece of the mayor of Vienna Karl Seitz – she came to Austria in the 1920s and married the socialist Ernst Hoffenreich. Having grown up in the Moscow upper class, how did Karin fare when she fell in love with an Austrian socialist? Or her son Gerhard, who grew up with his Nazi uncle and had to go to war for the German Army? In conversations with his father, the author, Gunnar Bolin, born in Stockholm in 1957, gets to the bottom of his family history, always closely interwoven with the European history of the interwar period. The result is an extraordinarily detailed and personal account of how the Second World War began and the impact it had on people’s lives.
