“A small empire in the medical field”. The Brünnlbad and the Fango Healing Establishment in the Nazi Era

The proposed project is a partnership between the Institute for Jewish History in Austria and the Medical University of Vienna. Although the forecourt of the former "Bründlbad" at Borschkegasse 4 was named Walter-Beck-Platz in 2000 after the son of the previous owner, there is no reference to his biography either on site or in the research literature. In October 2020, the University Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the Medical University Vienna moved into the adapted and renovated building. The initiative of the clinic’s management for sound research and a sustainable culture of remembrance and commemoration is a further starting point for the conception of the present project. The proposed research project focuses on two neighbouring health care facilities in Vienna's 9th District, the “Bründlbad” and the “Fango Healing Establishment” during the Nazi era.

Bei dem vorgeschlagenen Projekt handelt es sich um eine Kooperation des Instituts für jüdische Geschichte Österreichs mit der medizinischen Universität Wien. Der Vorplatz des ehemaligen „Bründlbades“ in der Borschkegasse 4 wurde zwar im Jahr 2000 nach dem Sohn des Vorbesitzers als Walter-Beck-Platz benannt, jedoch findet sich weder vor Ort noch in der Forschungsliteratur ein Hinweis auf dessen Biografie. In das adaptierte und renovierte Gebäude übersiedelte im Oktober 2020 die Universitätsklinik für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie der medizinischen Universität Wien. Die Initiative der Klinikleitung für eine fundierte Erforschung und eine nachhaltige Erinnerungs- und Gedenkkultur stellt einen weiteren Ausgangspunkt für die Konzeption des vorliegenden Projekts dar. Im Fokus des vorgeschlagenen Forschungsvorhabens stehen zwei benachbarte Gesundheitseinrichtungen im 9. Wiener Gemeindebezirk, das „Bründlbad“ und die „Fango-Heilanstalt“ während der NS-Zeit.
