Using the example of the association RE.F.U.G.I.U.S. - Rechnitz Refugee and Memorial Initiative, which was founded in 1992, this publication aims to show how a new culture of remembrance and commemoration could be implemented through the work of grassroots groups at regional and local level in the face of political and social resistance. For this purpose, the publication illuminates historical facts as well as the political and social environment in which the association became active and is still active today.

Am Beispiel des Vereins RE.F.U.G.I.U.S. – Rechnitzer Flüchtlings- und Gedenkinitiative, die 1992 gegründet wurde, soll in dieser Publikation aufgezeigt werden, wie durch die Arbeit zivilgesellschaftlicher Gruppierungen auf regionaler und lokaler Ebene gegen politische und gesellschaftliche Widerstände eine neue Gedenk- und Erinnerungskultur implementiert werden konnte. Dazu werden historische Fakten sowie das politische und gesellschaftliche Umfeld, in dem der Verein tätig wurde und bis heute aktiv ist, beleuchtet.
