Austro-Jewish female composers caught between success and persecution, exile and homecoming

Most of the women artists presented in the publication were born in Vienna at the end of the 19th century, lived through the First World War and the collapse of the monarchy. A new order came about, the likes of which the world had never experienced before. The old system no longer existed, Austria became a republic. The social and political developments of the so-called Golden Twenties, especially the renewal brought about by “Red Vienna”, marked the beginning of emancipation and liberation from old gender roles, which led to some female musicians achieving considerable success, even though the profession of "composer" was not yet widely accepted, which is why the publishers recommended that women who created music use pseudonyms in order to successfully publish their compositions. Thus, most of the works that were frequently broadcast on the radio were announced under the pseudonym. The aim of the project is to produce the book and subsequently present it at concerts in Austria and abroad, where the works of the important female composers will be performed.

Die meisten in der Publikation vorgestellten Künstlerinnen wurden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Wien geboren, erlebten den Ersten Weltkrieg und den Zusammenbruch der Monarchie. Es kam zu einer Neuordnung, wie sie die Welt vorher noch nicht erlebt hatte. Das alte System existierte nicht mehr, Österreich wurde eine Republik. Die gesellschaftliche und politische Entwicklung in den so genannten Goldenen Zwanzigerjahren, speziell die Erneuerungen des „Roten Wien“, setzten den Beginn zur Emanzipation und Befreiung aus alten Geschlechterrollen, wodurch einige der Musikerinnen beachtliche Erfolge erzielten, wenn auch der Beruf „Komponistin“ weitestgehend noch nicht akzeptiert war, weshalb den Musik schaffenden Frauen seitens der Verlage empfohlen wurde, Pseudonyme zu verwenden, um ihre Kompositionen erfolgreich zu veröffentlichen. So wurden die meisten Werke, die im Radio häufig übertragen wurden, unter ihrem Pseudonym angekündigt. Ziel des Projekts ist die Erstellung des Buches und in weiterer Folge dessen Präsentation bei Konzerten im In- und Ausland, bei denen die Werke der bedeutenden Komponistinnen aufgeführt werden.
