Erinnerungsorte an die NS-Zeit in der Stadt Salzburg

 

To this day, dozens of smaller and larger plaques, memorials, sculptures, art installations and murals commemorate the years of the Nazi reign of terror in Salzburg. Often hidden, but sometimes present in the cityscape, they are not only places of remembrance of a bygone era, but also a reflection of Austria’s politics of remembrance in recent decades. For example, the question arises why the memory of fallen war veterans takes up public space in almost every district of Salzburg in sometimes monumental installations, while places of remembrance for those who resisted and were persecuted by the regime usually remain very discreet and inconspicuous, more or less hidden. At the same time, many of Salzburg's places of remembrance were and are controversial, be it the decades-long struggle for an appropriate remembrance of the victims of Nazi “euthanasia” or the dispute over the Thorak statues, which are still hotly debated today. In extensively researched short chapters, the respective places of remembrance are concisely and informatively detailed and illustrated with historical and current photographs.

Bis heute erinnern dutzende kleinere und größere Tafeln, Mahnmäler, Skulpturen, Kunstinstallationen oder Wandgemälde an die Jahre der NS-Terrorherrschaft in Salzburg. Oft versteckt, manchmal doch auch präsent im Stadtbild, sind sie nicht nur Erinnerungsorte an eine vergangene Zeit, sondern auch Spiegelbild der österreichischen Erinnerungspolitik der letzten Jahrzehnte. So drängt sich beispielsweise die Frage auf, warum die Erinnerung an gefallene Kriegsteilnehmer in fast jedem Salzburger Stadtteil in teilweise monumentalen Installationen öffentlichen Raum einnimmt, während Erinnerungsorte an Widerständige und Verfolgte des Regimes meist sehr dezent und unscheinbar, mehr oder weniger versteckt bleiben. Gleichzeitig waren und sind viele der Salzburger Erinnerungsorte umstritten, sei es der jahrzehntelange Kampf um ein angemessenes Erinnern an die Opfer der NS- „Euthanasie“ oder die Auseinandersetzung um die bis heute heftig debattierten Thorak-Statuen. In ausgiebig recherchierten Kurzkapiteln werden die jeweiligen Erinnerungsorte prägnant und informativ aufbereitet und mit historischen und aktuellen Fotografien greifbar gemacht.
