Description

On the basis of numerous new documents, Erhard Stackl describes not only how Becker and the O5 planned the liberation of Vienna in 1945 and were betrayed, but also different kinds of resistance and the importance of the fight against forgetting. Hans Becker was among the first to be deported to Dachau concentration camp on a “transport of VIPs”. There, and later in Mauthausen, he joined forces with fellow prisoners in the fight against the Nazis. After his release, he succeeded in making contact with other opponents of the regime despite Gestapo surveillance, and he gradually organised the O5 resistance group, to which the engraving on Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral still bears witness today.
