Fritz Kreisler – a cosmopolitan in exile. From child prodigy to “king of the violinists”

The exhibition at the Exilarte Centre illustrates Kreisler's family history, his Viennese period and his special ability to communicate with the media, using numerous images, sheet music materials and life documents as well as the catalogue published in parallel. His violin style is also discussed (in connection with the great concertos and the Beethoven sonatas), as are his arrangements and his compositional style. The historical component of the expulsion by the Nazi state on "racial" grounds is also shown, and – as is already traditional in Exilarte exhibitions – other banished and ostracised violin virtuosos and string quartets of the time (Alma and Arnold Rosé, Carl Flesch, Bronislaw Hubermann, Ferdinand Adler, Busch Quartet, Rostal Quartet etc.) are included.

Die Ausstellung im Exilarte-Zentrum, veranschaulicht mit zahlreichen Bildern, Notenmaterialien und Lebensdokumenten sowie dem parallel erscheinenden Katalog Kreislers Familiengeschichte, seine Wiener Zeit sowie seine besondere Fähigkeit, mit den Medien zu kommunizieren. Auch sein Geigenstil (in Zusammenhang mit den großen Konzerten und den Beethoven-Sonaten) wird thematisiert, wie auch seine Bearbeitungen und seine Kompositionsweise. Ebenso wird die historische Komponente der auf „rassischen“ Gründen beruhenden Ausweisung durch den NS-Staat aufgezeigt, und – wie dies bei Exilarte-Ausstellungen schon Tradition ist – weitere vertriebene und verfemte GeigenvirtuosInnen und Streichquartetten jener Zeit (Alma und Arnold Rosé, Carl Flesch, Bronislaw Hubermann, Ferdinand Adler, Busch Quartett, Rostal Quartett etc.) werden einbezogen.
