“The End of Contemporary Witnessing” is an exhibition by the Jewish Museum Hohenems and the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial in cooperation with the Haus der Geschichte. The live testimonies of the Holocaust are coming to an end. Only a few survivors of the Nazi regime can still speak from their own experience – or tell of those people who were murdered in the Holocaust. At a – possibly historical – intersection of primary and secondary contemporary witnessing, the exhibition not only questions the role of the public, the "listeners" and the institutions with regard to dealing with memories of Holocaust survivors, but also takes a look at how memories have been “made” – or staged – and preserved over the past decades, depending on the social and/or contemporary historical context. The selection of interview sequences in the exhibition adaptation has a very specific approach to the history of the victims of the Nazi regime in Austria and at the same time forms a cross-section of those existing interviews of survivors with a connection to Austria.

"Das Ende der Zeitzeugenschaft" ist eine Ausstellung des Jüdischen Museums Hohenems und der KZ-Gedenkstätte Flossenbürg in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Haus der Geschichte. Die Zeitzeugenschaft des Holocaust geht ihrem Ende entgegen. Nur noch wenige Überlebende der NS-Herrschaft können aus eigener Erfahrung sprechen – oder von jenen Menschen berichten, die im Holocaust ermordet wurden. Die Ausstellung hinterfragt an einer möglicherweise historischen Schnittstelle von primärer und sekundärer Zeitzeugenschaft nicht nur die Rolle der Öffentlichkeit, der „Zuhörenden“ und der Institutionen im Hinblick auf den Umgang mit Erinnerungen von Holocaust-Überlebenden, sondern wirft auch einen Blick darauf, wie Erinnerungen je nach gesellschaftlichem und/oder zeithistorischem Kontext „gemacht“ – oder inszeniert – und über die letzten Jahrzehnte bewahrt wurden. Die Auswahl der Interviewsequenzen in der Ausstellungsadaption hat einen ganz spezifischen Zugang zur Geschichte der Opfer des Nationalsozialismus in Österreich und bildet gleichzeitig einen Querschnitt durch jene vorhandenen Interviews von Überlebenden mit einer Verbindung nach Österreich.
